Cath Anne: [00:01:08] Now remember, a thesis statement is one of the most important components of your essay. So that means you really want to focus on getting it right and thats why we have so many videos on The Homework Help Show about how to write an effective thesis statement. So today were going to talk about the thesis statement and Im also going to provide you with a few examples. Cath Anne: [00:01:38] Now, every thesis statement needs three things: [00:01:42] One [00:01:43] Two [00:01:43] Three Cath Anne: [00:01:44] Number one: what is the topic of your essay? So basically what are you going to be talking about in your essay. Cath Anne: [00:01:50] Number two: how do you feel about that topic? What is it that you believe about the topic at hand? Cath Anne: [00:01:59] And number three: Can you provide some evidence? Usually three reasons that you feel that way about that specific topic. Cath Anne: [00:02:08] OK now lets break down how to write a thesis. Begin by asking a question. Cath Anne: [00:02:15] So for example, does recycling really help the environment? Thats a good ,pertinent topic. Its really on trend right now. People are looking and questioning the environment and how we can contribute to making the environment more sustainable and our actions more sustainable and preventing climate change. So definitely a pertinent topic something that well want to discuss and that will peak the interest of your reader. Cath Anne: [00:02:42] Now second youll want to create a declaration. So in other words, how do you feel about recycling and how do you feel about whether recycling impacts the environment? So for example you might say something like, recycling does help the environment. However we must make long term changes to impact climate change. So do you see what I did there? You are starting with a topic question of does recycling help the environment. And now Ive decided that recycling does help the environment. And Ill discuss that in my essay. However Im going to focus on some other reasons that recycling doesnt address so Im going to incorporate some other reasonings and some other issues that we have to deal with in order to truly impact climate change. Cath Anne: [00:03:38] And then finally as youre developing your thesis statement, youre going to want to look at three reasons that recycling does not fully address climate change and youre going to provide those. And then in turn well write our strong thesis statement. Cath Anne: [00:03:54] So lets discuss three reasons why we have to do more than just recycling to impact climate change over the long term. For example my first reason is that China no longer purchases our recycling products from the US and Canada. So we have to look for an alternative solution. Second, when we continue to buy plastic and packaged products we are contributing to waste. A more sustainable option is to reduce our waste altogether while also recycling the waste that we do produce. But focusing on waste reduction is a more sustainable approach. And my third reason is to support organizations and businesses that are providing sustainable long term solutions to climate change. Cath Anne: [00:04:47] So those are my three reasons. And just a note youre always going to want to pick reasons that you can back up with evidence so definitely do a bit of research before you write this portion of your thesis statement and in turn youll already have a little bit of research done for your essay in advance. Cath Anne: [00:05:07] So now the final step is that we want to combine and write our thesis statement. So how might that look altogether. Now that weve completed those three steps. So for example my thesis statement is going to be in two sentences:. Cath Anne: [00:05:24] Recycling is one step that we can take to help the environment, but we must look at and consider other long term solutions because China is no longer purchasing our recycling from the US and Canada. Focusing on reducing our waste, and supporting organizations that are looking for long term, sustainable alternatives to recycling, are beneficial options that will support the environment in the long term. Cath Anne: [00:05:54] So here I have written a two sentence thesis statement that provides a topic, which is recycling. And the environment. It provides my position on the topic and it provides three pieces of evidence that support my position. Cath Anne: [00:06:12] Okay guys I really hope that was helpful for you. For example my first reason is that China no longer purchases our recycling products from the US and Canada. So we have to look for an alternative solution. Second, when we continue to buy plastic and packaged products we are contributing to waste. A more sustainable option is to reduce our waste altogether while also recycling the waste that we do produce. But focusing on waste reduction is a more sustainable approach. Protestant Ethics Of Webber Essays - Historical School Of Economics

Protestant Ethics of Webber Max Weber's original theory on the rise of Capitalism in Western Europe has been an often studied theory. In its relationship to Protestantism, specifically Calvinism, Weber's theory has been in scholarly debate since it's release in 1904. "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism" puts forth not capitalism as an institute, but as the precursor to the historical origins of capitalism. Weber's attempts to use statistical data, as well as church doctrine to prove his theory, has been the foundation for the main arena of debate amongst his peers. Weber, although touching on other religions and countries, specifically focuses on the Reformation and its correlation to the dominance of capitalism in Western civilizations. He centers his work on the thesis ?that the chances of overcoming traditionalism are greatest on account of the religious upbringing', thus ?it is worthwhile to ask how this connection of adaptability to capitalism with religious factors occurred in the early days of capitalism(1).' This break with tradition could be attributed to the ?calling' as depicted in the Protestant faith. Weber believes Protestants saw the ?calling' as finally sanctifying the earning of a profit and as a sign of salvation. In this, he saw a breaking of the ?backward-sloping supply curve' for labor by instilling a new work ethic and the bringing forth of capitalistic values. Amintore Fanfani in his critical work "Catholicism, Protestantism, and Capitalism" disagrees with Weber on the role Protestantism played in the development of capitalism. He argues that "Europe was acquainted with capitalism before the Protestant revolt" and thus "...we have ruled out that Protestantism could have produced a phenomenon that already existed(2)." He does agree that capitalism acquired prominence after the Reformation; however, he attributes the success to Italian merchants who operated under Catholicism decades earlier. Fanfani believes this discredits the influential aspects of religion on capitalism, and instead credits "that general revolution of thought that characterizes the period of the Renaissance and the Reformation, by which in art, philosophy, morals, and economy, the individual emancipates...himself from the bonds imposed on him during the Middle Ages(2)." Arguments could be made on Weber's behalf that it was the Reformation that ?emancipated' Protestants f rom the bonds of Catholic ritual. The removal of the Catholic priest necessitated Protestants to acquire a higher degree of learning for their own salvation. An education combined with divine sanction towards profit and a sinful attitude towards idleness would only lead towards a diligent work ethic. It can be inferred, in this rebuttal, that the Reformation may have been a guiding factor in the Renaissance and therefore Fanfani's argument would be inclusive of Weber's theory. The argument that capitalism existed before the Reformation is valid, but Fanfani is discussing it as a definition where as Weber discusses it as driving force. Weber's thoughts, that rationality being a basis for capitalism, inspired him to use several quotes from Ben Franklin early in his work. In where, even before there was a strong capitalistic foundation formed in the colonies, Weber found Franklin's writings to be infused with the prudence of rationality. From Franklin's work "Necessary Hints to Those That Would be Rich" Weber quotes: For six pounds a year you may have the use of one hundred pounds, provided you are a man of known prudence and honesty... He that loses five shillings, not only loses that sum, but all the advantages that might be made by turning it in dealing, which by the time that a young man becomes old, will amount of a considerable amount of money(3). Weber's critiques Dickson and McLachlan deny that Franklin is preaching a Protestant work ethic, and suggest that by the title of Franklin's work he is merely suggesting prudent advise. Yet, it is that prudent advise that fits neatly into Weber's definition of capitalism in where he states that ?one which rests on the expectation of profit by the utilization of opportunities for exchange, that is on peaceful chances of profit... and pursuit of profit and forever renewed profits through continuous, rational, capitalistic enterprise(1).' Dickson and McLachlan, like many other critiques, don't take into account that although Weber attempts to prove a statistical and specific point as to the origin of capitalism, it's a generalization he refers to.

Pin no. 1: It is connected to GROUND which connects the 555 timer to the negative 0v supply rail. Pin no. 2: It is the trigger pin. A negative pulse on this pin â€Å"sets† internal flip-flop and start up a timing cycle. Pin no. 3: is an output pin of the 555 timer, it can be connected directly to the inputs of other digital IC’S with the required voltage. Pin no. 4: is the RESET pin which is used to reset the internal flip-flop controlling the output. In other words to terminate the timing cycle. Pin no. 5: is a control voltage pin which can be used to alter the timing aspect of the 555 IC in applications such as frequency modulation. Pin no. 6: is the threshold pin which donates the duration of the timer to ‘output voltage in each of the on/off cycle’ this time phase end when voltage at threshold becomes higher than control voltage pin. Pin no. 7: is a discharge pin which is connected directly to the internal transistor which is used to discharge the timing capacitor to ground. Pin no. 8: is connected to the power supply and the range of voltage depends on the appliance need. MODES: After discussing above the different functions of 555 timers, let’s now discuss about its modes, its usage in different modes. 555 timers IC’s can be used as a multivibrator in three different forms they are as follow: Astable mode Monostable mode Bistable mode ASTABLE MODE: Astable means without a stable state. It has two unstable state means 0 and 1, in other words it continually switch it states to high and low creating a rectangular wave form on its output. There are numerous advantages of this circuit few of them in which it is used are flash lights, LED’S, and security alarm. When the voltage is not applied it remains in stable state but as the â€Å"trigger† is pressed it creates electric pulse and switches from stable state to unstable state and remains there for a limited time period which is set and after that it comes back to stable state. This type of circuit is ideal for â€Å"push to operate† system for a model displayed at exhibitions. A visitor push the button to start mechanism of choice and it automatically switch off after a set time. This circuit operates when the switch is closed and released, the voltage at Pin 2 goes up to down and then up. Due to this Pin 7 is discharged from zero and the voltage increases at output. When the voltage across the capacitor (C) gets two third then the output stop and it comes to stable state. The output of this circuit is shown in the FIG below. In this the trigger (which is Pin 2) and reset (which is Pin 4) both are at high state because of the resistors, while the threshold (which is Pin 6) is simply grounded. By taking the trigger LOW it switches to SET position and the output state changes to HIGH and by taking the RESET Pin LOW it switches to reset position and the output will remain LOW. TASK 1(B): A 555 timer is basically used in our daily life as a day/light alarm which can be useful for waking us up from our sleep. A 555 timer is used above and it works on a principle of astable mode with frequency of 1Khz. The transistor is set high because of the changeable resistor when light doesn’t fall on the LDR therefore causing the 555’s reset pin low. Just because of this the timer is reset. It resistance decrease when the light falls on LDR which in turn causes a decrease in base resistance of the transistor alloying current to flow. This will cause the reset pin on the 555 timer to increase and allows the timer to ‘oscillate’ and the speaker starts working by creating sound. TASK 2:  INTRODUCTION OF FET TRANSISTOR: The field effect transistor is a semiconductor device; it depends on its operation to control current by an electric field. FET’s are available in two basic forms and they are: Junction gate field effect transistor (JFET) Insulated gate field effect transistor (IGFET) But the most commonly used transistor is Metal-Oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET). It is commonly used because it can be connected as resistor and capacitor, it is cheaper than Bipolar junction transistor (BJT) , it is much smaller in size and there power consumption is much smaller. CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF FET Metal-Oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) is a type of semiconductor which uses three connections which are GATE, SOURCE and DRAIN. The effective width of the channel is controlled by a charge which is placed on gate electrode. The shape of a transistor is like a bar with P-type silicon and two strips which are doped to make N-type material when the metal is deposited to make two terminals DRAIN and SOURCE, then the surface is covered with silicon-oxide which is non-conductor. Then again metal is deposited to form one more terminal called gate which is shown in fig 1. interfacebus.com/JFET-N-Channel-symbol.png (March 20, 2011) After it is completed then the potential of (0V) is applied between the source and drain because of P-N junction there is no current flowing. The P-type material which is source terminal is at 0V, and the gate is already made positive so that it will repel the holes from P-type and turn it temporary N-type. This creates a channel joining two N-type strip so that current flow from drain. If the potential against gain terminal is greater, than the channel will become wider which ends with large current. To form a thin layer of silicon-oxide along one side of the channel is easy, and then leave the metal gate region down over the insulator. The gate channel will act as a semiconductor resistance as there Is not current applied to it, P-N junction is not formed nor the depletion layer because the whole conduction of current depends upon the voltage applied between source and drain. If we apply sufficient voltage across source and drain the current will flow through the channel. When negative voltage is applied through the gate terminal it will repel electron charge away from the gate terminal. But as N-type contain majority electron charge carriers by repelling then away from gate the applied negative voltage will create a depletion region. So the process is called Depletion Mode Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor. THE ENHANCEMENT MODE MOSFET: Enhancement mode contains two N-type channel and one P-type channel which is sandwiched between both N-type as shown in fig 2. Applying the positive voltage to the drain terminal with respect to source terminal and applying positive terminal to gate terminal. As a result it will attract all the free electrons towards the gate. As the positive voltage is increased the electric field will also become wider and more electrons are attracted. There are free electrons in P-type, source junction is forward biased, so the positive gate voltage can attract electrons towards the gate. The electrons which are attracted towards the gate will enhance the channel within the P-type region as shown in fig 3. Conduction takes place due to holes and electrons. Hence it is a bipolar device. BJT is a current controlled device. It operation depend upon the flow of both majority and minority carriers. BJT has low input impedance. BJT device is noisy. There are two type of BJTs NPN and PNP. BJT is difficult to construct and occupies more space. BJT does not have thermal stability. BJT cannot be used as voltage variable resistor. Habits and Traits of Beetles, Order Coleoptera Coleoptera means â€Å"sheath wings,† a reference to the hardened forewings which cover the insect’s body. Most people can easily recognize members of this order – the beetles. Beetles comprise nearly a quarter of all the described species on Earth. Over 350,000 species are known worldwide. The order is subdivided into four suborders, two of which are rarely observed. The suborder Adephaga includes ground beetles, tiger beetles, predacious diving beetles, and whirligigs. Water pennies, carrion beetles, fireflies, and the beloved lady beetles are all members of the larger suborder Polyphaga. Description Beetles have hardened forewings, called elytra, which protect the delicate hindwings folded beneath them. The elytra are held against the abdomen at rest, meeting in a straight line down the middle of the back. This symmetry characterizes most members of the order Coleoptera. In flight, a beetle holds the elytra out for balance and uses its membranous hindwings for movement. Beetles feeding habits are widely varied, but all have mouthparts adapted for chewing. Many beetles are herbivores, feeding on plants. The Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica, causes heavy damage in gardens and landscapes, leaving skeletonized leaves on the plants it devours. Study on Nutritional Status of School Children A STUDY ON NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF SCHOOL CHILDREN IN RURAL, SEMI URBAN AND URBAN AREAS OF CHENNAI. INTRODUCTION: The health and nutritional status of children is an index of national investment in the development of its future manpower. According to World Health Organization, protein energy malnutrition refers to â€Å"imbalance between the supply of protein and energy and the body’s demand for them to ensure optimal growth and function. This imbalance includes both inadequate and excessive energy intake; the former leading to malnutrition in the form of wasting, stunting and underweight, and the latter resulting in overweight and obesity†. The consequences of child malnutrition are enormous and are intertwined with the development of society. Malnutrition affects the child’s physical and cognitive growth and increases the susceptibility to infections and severity of diseases while having adverse implications on income and economic growth indirectly. According to UNICEF data, 90% of developing world’s undernourished live in Asia and Africa while 40% of the world’s malnourished live in India. The 2013 Global Hunger Index Report ranked India 16th, which represents the serious hunger situation. The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) data indicates that 43% of children under 5 years of age are underweight and 2% of them are overweight. In India, we face a double jeopardy of malnutrition i.e., children from urban areas are affected with problems of over-nutrition while those from rural area suffer from effects of under-nutrition. The long term consequences of malnutrition on a child-turned-adult are issues of deep concern. Under-nutrition impairs the child’s immune system and weakens the defenses against other diseases. Whereas over-nutrition contributes to childhood obesity and leads to the early onset of hypertension, Diabetes mellitus, coronary heart diseases, orthopedic disorder and other respiratory diseases. School age is the active phase of childhood growth. Poor nutritional status in children leads to high absenteeism and early school dropouts thereby affecting the literacy rate of the country apart from affecting health status of the children. On the other hand, increasing lifestyle changes in urban areas has led to the emergence of over-nutrition and childhood obesity. To evaluate this changing trend and to determine the burden of malnutrition, we attempted to do a cross sectional study to assess the nutritional status of school children (11-14years old). OBJECTIVES: To determine the nutritional status of children based on their BMI and waist hip ratio and its relation to various factors like gender, area of residence and socio-economic status. METHODOLOGY: After being approved by the Institutional Ethical Committee of Stanley Medical College, a cross sectional descriptive study was carried out in the year 2011 over a period of 3 months from June to September involving 300 children in the age group of 11 to 14 years. Three schools were selected one each in rural area, semi urban area urban area. 100 children from each school were selected as subjects for the study. Data regarding the subjects’ socioeconomic background, religion, dwelling place, three day diet recall and type and duration of physical activities per day. Also their anthropometric measurements including height, weight, circumference of waist and hip were recorded. We have recorded body weight to the nearest 0.1 kg using a standard balance scale with subjects barefoot. Height of the children from the floor to the highest point on the head was recorded when the subject was facing directly ahead, barefoot, feet together, arms by the sides. Heels, buttocks and upper bac k were made to be in contact with the wall when the measurement was made. The height was recorded and rounded off to the nearest 1 cm. BMI (weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in metres) of the children were calculated. The waist circumference was measured at the level of umbilicus. The hip circumference was measured at the widest part of the buttocks. Waist hip ratios were calculated. Data was analyzed at the end of 3 months. RESULTS: Based on the statistical analysis done at the end of the data collection, the following results were obtained. Out of the 300 students assessed in the study, 55% of them were boys and 45% were girls; 39.67% belonged to age 11, 14.67% belonged to age 12, 19.33% belonged to age 13 and 26.33% belonged to age 14. Based on socio-economic status, 1.67% belonged to class 1, 17% belonged to class 2, 38% belonged to class 3, 42.67% belonged to class 4 and 0.67% belonged to class 5. On assessing the 300 children for BMI, 67.33% were found to be underweight, of which 29.67% were from rural areas; 6% were found to be overweight or obese, of which 4.67% were from urban areas. The percentage of under-weight children was 65% in semi urban area and 48% in urban area in contrast to 89% in rural area. TABLE 1. Relation between BMI, Waist Hip Ratio and Area of residence Of the 100 children assessed in rural area, only one was found to be overweight and no one was obese. Among the 100 children assessed in the semi urban area, 3 were overweight. Whereas in urban area, 7 children of the 100 were overweight and another 7 were found to be obese. Thus, in urban area, almost 14% of the children were either obese or overweight. This percentage is significantly higher than the 1% and 3% found in rural and semi urban areas. The percentage of the children who were categorized as normal according to their BMI was only 10% in rural but 32% and 38% in semi-urban and urban areas respectively (Figure 1). Figure 1. According to the data obtained, waist hip ratio of the children was also calculated. It is found that 20% of children in rural area and 32% of children in urban area fall under high-risk category of waist hip ratio. Waist Hip ratio more than 1 in boys and 0.85 in girls indicates an increased risk of metabolic complications. Though the frequency of high risk W:H ratio is higher among children from urban areas than that of rural areas, the difference was not statistically significant. The prevalence of underweight was 69.09% among boys and 65.19% among girls. This difference is not statistically significant indicating that there is no evidence of gender inequality in this study (Table 2). TABLE 2. Relation of gender and socio-economic status over BMI Socio-economic status of each child was assessed based on modified Kuppusamy’s scale. The prevalence of underweight children was 84.62% among socio-economic status class 45 and only 54.12% among socio-economic status class 1,2 3. It is evident that there is a significant statistical difference in the prevalence of underweight children in Class 45 as compared to Class 1, 2 3 ( Table 2). Figure 3. The children were also asked about their choice of games and sports. And it was found that nearly 45% of the boys and girls in rural area were involved in games requiring severe physical activity. The mean playtime of children from rural area was 1.6 hours/day. In semi-urban area, only 25% of the boys and girls were involved in games requiring severe physical activity whereas the percentage was only around 15% in urban area. The mean playtime of children from semi-urban and urban areas were 1.6 hours/day and 1.1 hours/day respectively. The three day diet history obtained from the children was analyzed and the average amount of calorie intake per day was calculated for all. The mean calorie consumption of the children, irrespective of their area of residence, was 1333 kcal. The mean calorie intake of children in rural area was found to be 991.7 kcal. The calorie consumption was found to be lesser when compared to the mean calorie intake in semi urban and rural areas, which were 1461.7 kcal and 1545.7 kcal respectively (Figure 4). It was also found that the irregularity in taking meals was the greatest among the children in urban area. Figure 4. DISCUSSION: A healthy child becomes a healthy adult. Of the various factors which determine the health of the child, nutrition plays the most vital role. Low body weight is unhealthy and harmful in the way it has dire consequences on both physical and psychological well-being of a child. Decreased level of thinking, impaired concentration, irritable mood and heightened obsessiveness, while contributing to the psychological effects of malnutrition, undermines the academic performance of a child and leads to the development of a socially withdrawn child. On the other hand, malnutrition has a profound impact on immune system by weakening the defenses and aggravating the effects of infections. Infections contribute to malnutrition by a variety of mechanisms including anorexia and impaired absorption of nutrients. This shows that enteric infection begets malnutrition and malnutrition begets more infections. According to World Bank statistics, Child malnutrition is responsible for 22 percent of India’s burden of disease and contributes to an estimated adult productivity loss of 1.4% of gross domestic product (GDP). It has been estimated to play a role in about half of all child deaths and more than half of child deaths from major diseases, such as malaria, diarrhea, measles and pneumonia. Recent trends in India suggest that there has been a dramatic fall of severe underweight prevalence in urban areas (by 26%) compared to rural areas though the decline in underweight prevalence was considered inadequate according to UNICEF. Our cross-sectional study shows that boys are more likely to be stunted and underweight than girls though there was no significant gender inequality because of limited sample size. Our study determined the point prevalence of underweight children in relation to various factors like gender, age, area of residence and socio economic status while data from various studies indicated that decline in the prevalence of under-nutrition was lesser in girls compared to boys and lesser in scheduled caste scheduled tribe as compared to other castes. Children with normal BMI constitute only 10% in rural areas while 38% of them had normal BMI in urban area. The collected data signify that under-nutrition is the burning problem in rural areas whereas urban areas suffer from the double jeopardy of malnutrition. It showed that mean height and weight of boys and girls was lower than the CDC 2000 standards in all age groups. The prevalence of underweight and stunting was highest among the age group of 11 to 13 years whereas wasting was more prevalent in the age group of 5 to 7 years. In this study, under-nutrition was found to be significantly more prevalent in girls than in boys. Data from our study says that probability of a child being undernourished is higher in rural area than in urban area. A study found that the prevalence of stunting was observed to be 52.3% and severe stunting was 25.1%. The determinants of this study included father’s occupation and income rather than the educational and occupational status of mother in the patriarchal society. In a multivariate study done in Brazil, stunting was found to be significantly associated with low economic income, inadequate protein intake and polyparasitism, especially Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichura. Evidences suggest that cell mediated immunity is depressed in malnutrition thereby increasing the duration and severity of infections with increasing degrees of malnutrition. The most common infection related deaths due to malnutrition were diarrhea and acute respiratory infections. Infant feeding practices and mother’s education status form the major determinants of Protein Energy Malnutrition. Better feeding practices were found to reduce the prevalence of stunting by 30%. Exclusive breastfeeding and partial breastfeeding were found to be more protective when compared to no breastfeeding. The median relative risk of death from diarrhea fell from 25 in no breastfeeding to 8.6 in exclusive or partial breastfeeding highlighting the paramount importance of breastfe eding in the prevention of malnutrition. Hence, it is necessary to cut down the causal factors of malnutrition before the child attains the age of 3 years. Better feeding practices, health awareness, sanitation, sustained availability of nutritious foods for all sections of people and enhanced access to healthcare services are essential steps to attain the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. Failure to invest in combating nutrition can have adverse impacts on potential economic growth. Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme, launched on 2nd October 1975, is India’s unique programme to improve the nutritional status of children by providing supplementary nutrition, pre-school education, immunization and health education for pregnant and nursing mothers. Though ICDS is successful in many ways, decline in undernutrition in India is slower when compared with other developing countries because ICDS Scheme’s mainly focusses on food supplementation rather than health education and children aged 3-6 yea rs rather than younger children (0-3 years). Our study reiterates the trends of malnutrition in relation to various factors and also highlights the need for differential approach in urban and rural areas to combat malnutrition. CONCLUSION: This cross-sectional study was undertaken to study the nutritional status of children aged 11-14 years and its relation to various factors like gender, area of residence and socio-economic status. This study also attempted to collect data on the amount of calories consumed per day, frequency and regularity of taking meals and level of physical activity in rural, semi-urban and urban areas. According to our study, 67.33% were underweight and 6% were overweight or obese. The prevalence of under-weight was found to be significantly higher in rural area(89%) than in urban area(48%) while urban area takes the upper hand in the prevalence of over-weight children. Our study also estimated that a child from rural area consumes an average of 991.7 kcal while calorie consumption of a child from urban area is much higher, averaging to 1545.7 kcal. Children belonging to socio-economic status Class 45, according to modified Kuppusamy’s scale, were more deprived of nutrients than the children of upper and middle class. Nutritional status was also found to be slightly poorer in boys than that of girls. The data collected also indicated that the mean calorie consumption of children in rural area was 991.7 kcal when compared to 1461.7 kcal in semi-urban and 1565.7 in urban area. However, the mean playtime of children in urban area was 1.1 hours/day with most of the children opting to play video games in their playtime whereas the mean playtime of a child was 1.6 hours/day in rural area. This data highlights a relative increase in calorie consumption in urban area with increase in sedentary lifestyle thereby setting a stage for the development of childhood obesity. Hence, we conclude our study re-emphasizing the various determinants of malnutrition and highlighting the changing trend in the nutritional status of children in urban, semi-urban and rural area.

The Big Lesson from the Poem, The Rime of the Ancient...

A lot of stories have a central theme or message that is shaped by the words surrounding it. The lesson could be depressing, funny, or serious. It never really matters, but a moral is a lesson to be learned from a story or event. The moral may be left to the hearer, reader or viewer to determine for themselves, or may be explicitly encapsulated in a maxim. The mariner is cursed with a lifelong penance after he killed the Albatross. He has to feel a pain in his chest that becomes unbearable until he sees a certain soul that is the right one to tell to. No matter what. In the long poem, â€Å"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner† by Samuel Taylor Coleridge has three lessons about human life and they are supernatural, pride, and suffering. He obviously didnt intend to bring about drought and death to the crew, but he thought they could do without this bird whose arr ival happened to coincide with a lot of good luck. His pride got the better of him. The final message that Coleridge conveys in â€Å"Rime† is suffering and how is can change for the good. After his crew dies and his boat is pretty much stranded in one spot in the ocean, the mariner starts to question why he wasn’t allowed to die. He is thirsty and he has to spend his days being haunted at night and forced to stay awake. The mariner sees animals at sea and blesses the creatures in the sea and somehow the curse is lifted. The suffering is over! This theme helps us realize that all of nature’s creations are worthy of our love and respect. Killing the Albatross showed disrespect in the eyes of the spirits and now he has to pay the penance. The entire poem, but especially the middle section concerning the drought, contains enough suffering to last several lifetimes. My vote for the most cringe-worthy moment is when the Mariner has to bite his arm to wet his lips wit h his own blood so that he can yell, â€Å"I bit my arm, I sucked the blood, and cried, a sail, a sail† (part three, line 160). In 2001 Eric Schlosser published â€Å"Fast Food Nation.† Eric Schlosser’s early 21st century muckraking text, â€Å"Fast Food Nation,† attempts to shed light on the consequences of the fast food industry on American society. Today about half of the money used to buy food is spent at restaurants – mainly fast food restaurants† (Schlosser 4). Typical jobs of a housewife, such as cooking and cleaning, are now being done by other industries (Schlosser 4). The men and women of the household no longer have the time or energy after work to prepare a meal, so they turn to the fast food industries to do the job for them. Society today is starting to believe that the American dream can simply be advertised and purchased. Another social outcome from the fast food industry is that Ronald McDonald, McDonald’s fictional character, is now the second most recognized fictional character behind Santa Claus and some don’t even recognize Jesus Christ (Schlosser 4). The Golden Arches of McDonald’s are now more widely known than the Christian Cross (Schlosser 5). It is these things that are scaring a lot of Americans. Kids recognize and know more fast food companies than they do about school, religion, and other things they may need to know in the future.
